Thurs. 2/16 – “Manifest Destiny”

Today we will be setting up a week long look into the Westward expansion of the U.S. and the many different obstacles and opportunities that came along with it. To help frame this point in history we will begin by identifying the unique situation that the U.S. finds itself and the cultural change that begins to take place with the idea of Manifest Destiny

Learning Targets

I can define the meaning of “Manifest Destiny”

Please create a “Start and Stop” resolution for yourself in 2014

This year think about something that you would like to START doing this year and something you would like to STOP doing this year.

“The quicker you begin to take responsibility for who you are and what you can become, The faster you can get to where you want to be”

The Main Course

Today we will be connecting this idea of taking control of our development and connect it to the “Manifest Destiny”  time period of American History.

To help connect today’s Brainstorm question with our topic we will begin to see the U.S. at a state of self identity. We will attempt to personify the U.S. at this point in history. If the U.S. was a person, what kind of person would it be? What is its history? Does it play well with others? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Together we will define Manifest Destiny as:

The idea that “we can create our own Nations future”

This idea than lead to the belief that the U.S. was destined (by God) to stretch across the continent.

To help visualize this growth  across the continental U.S., we will be filling in the following map of American growth and guided notes.
